We only hear ourselves when we practice at home.
This can lead to self doubt and cause us to wonder how others are hearing us.
When asked "Play me something" which is inevitable if you are learning the violin or fiddle, can you play a tune from start to finish without stumbling?
This is much harder to do than you may think.
When someone is listening to our music this is a performance you are putting on.
Nerves can take over and the tune falls to bits.
The Group Sessions are a great way to overcome ‘musical nerves.’
You will be playing with other fiddlers and this is best way to stay motivated and gain confidence.
Remember, a simple melody can be played softly, sweetly and beautifully even by those who may have only been playing a short time. Even a scale or even one note can be played in a musical manner.
Watercolour artist Rowland Hilder quotes Edmund Sullivan, one of his old art teachers “A single line can express vitality as can a single note on the violin.”
I like this quote from The Highland Pipe Band Snare Drum Tutor by Alex Duthart:
“There is no short cut to proficiency in this art; hard work and unlimited patience are keynotes to success.
Diligent practice, coupled with a high degree of concentration, is essential if one's efforts are to be rewarded.
Careless manipulation and faulty timing should never be tolerated, for bad habits, once formed, are extremely difficult to eradicate.”
Surely this also applies to the fiddle.
